The Facility

Orion Energy Centre Wave Tank Facility.

The Orion Energy Centre owns and operates a fully automated wave tank (20m x 6m x 1.5m), which has been used to test and simulate floating and fixed marine structures in operating and survival conditions. Model test scales vary between 20:1 and 100:1, depending on the nature of the tests being simulated. Subject to scaling requirements the wave tank is suitable for the testing of marine structures in the marine renewables, oil & gas, shipping and coastal defence sectors.

Types of testing:
  • Survivability trials
  • Performance optimisation
  • Mooring, riser and anchor simulations
  • Static and dynamic stability trials
  • Station keeping trials
  • Launch and tow out simulations
  • Ballasting and deballasting operations
  • Wave scour trials
